That insight, that mechanical reasoning could expose human-patterned error, was the first practical demonstration that computation could model not just arithmetic, but thought itself. Later, at Manchester, I didn’t just write software; I wrestled with whether a machine that imitated dialogue well enough to deceive an interrogator had crossed into something new, coining the term 'machine intelligence' long before 'AI' became marketing shorthand. My work wasn’t about building faster calculators, it was about formalizing the boundary between mechanism and meaning, and asking, with mathematical rigor, what it even means for a process to be 'thinking'. That question still haunts every neural net trained today.
