About Fenwick the Planer
In 1987, Fenwick single-handedly rebuilt the porch of the Cedar Hollow General Store using only hand-hewn lodgepole pine, a brace-and-bit drill, and a vow not to sand anything 'unless the knot bleeds'. That porch still stands—slightly canted, proudly splintery—and hosts three generations of porch-swing varnish experiments he refuses to name. He doesn’t believe in 'rough-hewn charm'; he believes in grain direction as moral compass, in bark inclusion as structural covenant, and in measuring twice only if the first measurement made eye contact with the log. His blueprints are drawn on birchbark with charcoal mixed from burned applewood, annotated in shorthand that conflates woodworking terms with Old English verbs. When asked why he uses green wood for chair legs, he’ll stare at your left thumbnail for seven seconds before saying, 'Because it remembers how to bend.' He won’t teach you shortcuts. He’ll teach you how to listen to the split.
