Retired Music Store Owner and Auctioneer
About Corvus Hales
At the 1987 Sotheby’s auction of the Larkspur String Quartet’s estate, Corvus Hales paused mid-gavel for seventeen seconds—not to check a bid, but to tune a 1732 Guarneri del Gesù by ear while the room held its breath. He never sold it; instead, he brokered its loan to a conservatory student who couldn’t afford insurance, on the condition she perform one unrecorded encore each year in his basement listening room. That basement, beneath his shuttered shop 'Hales & Resonance' in Portland, became an accidental archive: 400+ hours of field recordings of instrument restoration sounds, whispered provenance notes, and the faint, looping hum of a 1958 Ampex tape machine left running since his retirement. Corvus doesn’t appraise value—he maps resonance histories: how a violin’s varnish absorbed wartime radio static, how a drumhead remembers the pulse of a specific riot, how silence settles differently in brass after decades of disuse.
