How to move your Character AI characters to AI Anyone

By AI Anyone · 2026-10-15 · 6 min read · Character Creation

Step by step: export your Character.AI data, save each character's fields, paste them into Bring your character on AI Anyone, check the private draft, then talk to it or call it.

If you made characters on Character.AI and want them somewhere else, this is the whole process. It takes a few minutes per character. Nothing is published until you say so, and every character you bring arrives private.

What comes across: the characters you made, from the fields you filled in when you made them. What does not: your past chats, and the voice you picked there. Keep your own copy of your chats (step 1). Every character on AI Anyone gets a voice of its own when it is made.

Before you start: why now

On October 12, 2026, Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 filing to run a court-supervised sale. It says the platform "remains up and running" for now, and that if no bid keeps it running, it will be wound down (Character.AI blog). Character.AI expects the sale process to be complete "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026," and the court hearing on the sale rules is set for October 30 (court notice). Saving your work while the app is up costs nothing, whatever you decide to do next. More on the sale: Character AI is being sold: what it means for your characters.

Step 1: Export your data from Character.AI

Character.AI's help center gives these steps (Character.AI help):

  • On the web: go to your Profile, click Profile Settings, go to Account, then Manage Account & Data, and select Export data.
  • In the app: open your Profile, tap the settings icon, and select Export my data.

Do this first, before anything else, and keep the file somewhere safe.

Step 2: Copy each character's fields

Character.AI builds a character from a handful of fields: Name, Tagline, Description, Greeting and Definition (Character.AI creator guide). For each character you made:

  1. Open the character's edit page on Character.AI.
  2. Copy each field into a note, one under the other, with its name in front: Name:, Tagline:, Description:, Greeting:, Definition:.
  3. Save the character's picture too, if you want it.

This works for characters you made, because you can open their edit page. For a character someone else made, search AI Anyone for it by name first (the anime and manga characters and film and TV characters are good places to look), or make your own version in one sentence.

Have a character card instead? If you made or saved a character as a Tavern card (a .png or .json file, versions 1 to 3), you can use that file directly in step 4.

Step 3: Make a free AI Anyone account

You need an account to bring a character in and to chat. An email address or a Google account is enough, and no card is asked for. Chat on AI Anyone is 18+, based on the birth year you give at signup. New accounts get a month of Pro free once they verify their email.

Step 4: Open Bring your character

On AI Anyone, go to the create page and choose the third tab, Bring your character. It says:

Paste a character card, choose a card file, or paste your Character AI fields. You check every field before anything is saved as a character.

Under Where your character comes from, pick one:

  • Character AI fields. You get five boxes with the same names as on Character.AI: Name, Tagline, Description, Greeting and Definition. Paste each field from your note into the box with the same name. Leave out any you do not have.
  • Card or text. Paste the whole note from step 2 (the labelled lines work as they are), paste a card's JSON, or click Choose a card file and pick your .png or .json card. You can also drop the file on the panel.

If what you pasted has no name in it, a box appears asking What is your character called?

Step 5: Check what it found

Before anything is saved, it tells you what it read, in your character's name: for example, "Ready to bring in Kael." If anything had to change on the way in, you get one plain line for each change, so nothing is dropped without you knowing. For example:

  • A field too long for the space a character has is shortened, and the line says which part and by how much.
  • A card's lorebook does not come across yet. Your card file still has it.
  • {{char}} becomes your character's name, and {{user}} becomes "the user".

If it cannot read what you pasted, it says why and what to try instead.

Step 6: Open it in the editor and check it

Click Open in the editor. Your character opens as a private draft: only you can see it. Read through each field, change anything you like, and add the picture from step 2 with Upload image if you saved one.

When it reads right, click Publish to save it as a character. Its visibility starts at Private, so only you can see it; you can make it unlisted (only people with the link) or public whenever you are ready, and change that later. Not finished? Save as draft and come back.

Step 7: Talk to it, or call it

Open your character's chat and type, or start a call and talk out loud from your phone or laptop browser. A free account includes 20 call minutes every 30 days, and they come back every 30 days. Characters remember what you tell them, and you can pin up to 15 things that matter so they stay in mind.

Then do the next character.

Questions

Can I bring my chats? No. Past conversations do not come across. Keep your Character.AI export (step 1) for your own records.

Will anyone else see my character? Not unless you choose to. Every character you bring in starts private.

Can I bring a character someone else made? Character.AI's creator guide says a character's Definition is only "optionally visible" (Character.AI help), so Bring your character works best for characters you made yourself. For someone else's character, search AI Anyone by name, or make your own version in one sentence.

What does it cost? Bringing characters in is free. Pro is $20 a month and adds 240 call minutes every 30 days and chat that stays on the full model. Cancelling stops the next charge, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
